Voices & narration

Choose the right narrator

Compare voices, pacing, tone, and pronunciation before creating.

4 min read

The best narrator depends on the book. Previewing the same excerpt across a few voices makes differences in warmth, pace, and emphasis easy to hear.

Compare voices

  • Fiction often benefits from an expressive voice with a wider dynamic range.
  • Nonfiction is usually clearest with an even, conversational delivery.
  • Dense or technical books may be easier to follow at a slightly slower pace.
  • Listen for names, places, and invented words in your preview passage.

Make a useful preview

  1. 1

    Choose a representative passage

Pick 30–60 seconds containing dialogue, description, or important terminology.

  2. 2

    Listen on headphones

Check clarity, pauses, and emphasis without relying on laptop speakers.

  3. 3

    Compare at normal speed

Avoid changing playback speed until you have selected the most natural base voice.

Language and pronunciation

Choose a narrator that supports your book’s primary language. Pronunciation can vary across names and regional terms, so include those in the preview whenever possible.
